Traditionally it can take 500 to 1000 hours to quilt a queen or king size quilt by hand. During the 19th century quilting bees were social gatherings in which friends would gather to help each other complete their quilting projects. Most people today have difficulty finding the time necessary to complete very many significant quilting projects using this method.
By learning free-motion machine quilting, you can reduce quilting time to about 40 to 60 hours. However, even with machines designed with quilting in mind, this process can be physically taxing. Maneuvering a king size quilt through the 7 to 9 inch throat of a domestic machine while maintaining the integrity of the quilt, can be pretty tricky.
